The Price of Interaction
The supposition that the fewer the clicks required to reach something, the better the design is ubiquitous. But anyone familiar with UX knows better. We know that this premise can lead to overly complicated screens, an onslaught of way too many options for users that prevents them from choosing. So where do people who think fewer clicks are better have it wrong? In their failure to recognise that the price of interaction can take on multiple forms. We are either burning our physical resources (by clicking, scrolling or typing) or consuming our mental energy (by choosing among available options, deciphering
Aristocratic UX
When designing new and innovative interfaces, we are trying to predict where we are headed and what the future will bring. What will the new user expectations be, and how will be able to best meet them? Josh Clark has pertinently said that UX does not necessarily bring in new ideas, but implements old dreams instead. One way to do this is to bring magic into our daily lives. Today, we are designing experiences that were once only the realm of magicians. However, the life of an average man not only differs greatly from that of magicians, but also from the
Lets fulfill the business goals
When designing or redesigning products we frequently face the situation when stakeholders provide an already finalised concept for UX experts and digital designers to work with. Nevertheless, this process does not support efficient business. If we wish to implement a rigid and finalized business concept it is highly unlikely that we will meet the users’ needs as we planned. And we will not be able to sell a product or service if it is not designed according to the user’s needs. Let’s see the advantages of involving UX experts in the early stages of a product, a webpage or an
Advice to stakeholders
Difficult to imagine the problems and issues the predecessors of today’s usability experts, the architects thousands of years ago had struggled with. It wasn’t easy to build up science and art from nothing, to figure out how things work and how to achieve practicality and beauty. And design difficulty was only part of the problem. We can only imagine the reaction of our architect’s sponsors to the fact that planning and designing would not be a complete waste of time during monumental constructions. What could have possibly an ancient chieftain, leader of the king thought when he met a strange

Smart paper prototype
We all have seen projects wasting money and time for unnecessary developments and features based on totally wrong design concepts. Good news is we can avoid this with a cheap and easy method. Paper prototype testing prevents projects to go to astray. What is paper prototype testing? Paper prototype refers to several hand drawn or printed images of the site which we use during testing as opposed to the original site with high development costs. The testing includes a user, a test instructor and a third person representing the computer. The user performs different tasks while using the printed images,
Five things to get more out of your online shop
Even if you own a successful webshop there is always room for improvement in order to reach higher conversion rates: helping the user to achieve her goals by removing obstacles from her way or at least not hinder the user in her activity. Here are five tips to try on your website. Emphasize delivery information Majority of the webpages require at least a one or two minute research from the user to find out delivery details. The information is usually hidden somewhere in the obscure section of Shopping or Customer Information. Delivery information should be accessible otherwise you have to
Wireframes and colors
A graphic design mock-up and a high fidelity wireframe share several characteristics which makes difficult to see where the work of the UX expert ends and the graphic designer’s starts. Not yet prevalent in Hungary, smart project planning beyond the waterfall model makes possible for the UX and the graphic designer to work on the same task together. Several UX designers avoid using images and colors while creating wireframes. Colors direct the user’s eyes, convey meaning and help to separate elements therefore I believe that a detailed wireframe must involve colors. Using colors in a wireframe is not about beauty.
Unity in design
The concept of unity is an essential principle in design. Today, we cannot imagine a quality web page without carefully applied typography, color unity and other look and feel elements. Although, less emphasis is put on the unified and well-designed working mechanisms of the page, it has equal or rather more significance. Users get confused and feel insecure if the working mechanism lacks unity and they cannot perform certain interactions because the mechanisms are unexpected and obscure. The following list contains several useful considerations to achieve consistency and unity in the working mechanism: If you use widgets (e.g. to show
Raiffeisen mobile banking app, a nice try
Today, a large company without a mobile page or application is embarrassing. Raiffeisen might as well felt the shame so the Raiffeisen mobile banking app was born. Recently, we shared a great article on mobile app design on our facebook page. Raiffeisen mobile banking app feels as if a couple of enthusiastic developers reading this article quickly put together an app to try if it really works. But Raiffeisen mobile app is so simple it is rather shocking. Starting with the login, it is funny because the app is presented in Hungarian (in App Store) but its only language seems
